Runway: the toolbox when it goes beyond a single clip
Runway is more than a generator: masking, retouching, style transfer and camera control make it a small post-production suite. What that means day to day.

Runway produces short clips from text or a still image and adds tools that usually live in editing software: masking objects, removing distractions, transferring styles, prescribing camera moves.
That mixture is the real difference from pure model vendors. If you have to adjust what you generate rather than only generate it, you save the trip into a second program.

Budget realistically
As everywhere: the subscription price is the smaller half of the bill. Every generation costs credits, and usable results rarely appear on the first attempt.
One question has proved useful for costing: how many attempts do I typically need for one usable clip? That number times the credit price is your real unit cost.
The free tier is meant for trying things out and is spent quickly. If you produce regularly, budget for a paid plan from the start.
Where other tools fit better
For long, continuous scenes the approach in our Kling portrait is closer to the mark. For speaking humans the route runs through avatar tools as in our HeyGen portrait. And for voiceover alone, ElevenLabs plus ordinary editing software is enough.
Runway stays strong where material is shaped and reworked, not merely generated.
In short: the most mature environment for creative short clips with post-production. Think in unit cost per usable clip, not in subscription price.
