What the free tiers can do today
The gap between free and paid tiers has narrowed. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Le Chat all give free access to capable models, with limits on the number and speed of requests.
For occasional use that is usually enough: drafting an email, summarising a text, settling a question. Work with them several hours a day and you will hit the limits regularly.
The three usual limits
First, usage caps: after a number of requests you are switched to a weaker model or made to wait. Second, missing features, since file analysis, longer context, web search or image generation are often reserved for paid tiers.
Third, and most important professionally: data protection. Free plans generally come without a data processing agreement, and inputs flow into training more often. That rules them out for company data in most cases.
When a subscription pays off
The rule of thumb from our testing: from around an hour of daily use, a subscription at roughly 20 euros a month pays for itself through a few minutes saved per day.
Mixing works well too: a paid tool for the main task, free offerings for everything else. A translation subscription plus a free chatbot is the most economical combination for many smaller teams.
Free and still strong: three recommendations
For research with evidence, the free Perplexity tier goes a long way. For image generation without running costs, a locally hosted Stable Diffusion setup is unbeatable, provided you have the hardware.
And for everyday work Le Chat is worth a look: generous free use, European processing, high speed. For many standard tasks the quality gap to the competition's paid tiers is smaller than expected.
Rule of thumb: under an hour of use per day, the free tiers usually suffice. Above that, or as soon as company data is involved, there is no way around a paid plan.
