Perplexity review

A research assistant with sources instead of invented answers.

Editorial verdict: The best tool in this test when verifiability matters more than elegant prose.

Perplexity does not answer from the model's memory: it searches the web first and then backs every sentence with footnotes. That approach takes much of the sting out of generative AI's biggest problem, because anything unsupported stands out immediately.

In testing, the deep research mode convinced us most: it works through several dozen sources on a question and builds a structured report from them. For market monitoring, competitive analysis and getting into an unfamiliar topic, that is a substantial time saving.

The limits are just as clear: where there are no good sources, the answer stays thin. And for anything beyond research, editing, rewriting, longer pieces, the classic AI chatbots are the better choice.
